Author Interview with Marx Pyle on Obsidian Monsters

Author Interview with Marx Pyle on his Kindle Vella Obsidian Monsters, and Upcoming Anthology Dragons of a Different Tail

Marx Pyle is one busy author! While he has his exciting urban fantasy, Obsidian Monsters, on Kindle Vella going, he also is releasing a new anthology Dragons of a Different Tail: 17 Unusual Dragon Tales, where he is working with numerous authors to bring readers unique dragon stories in every scenario!

Tell me a little bit about your Kindle Vella Obsidian Monsters?

Obsidian Monsters is a mixture of urban fantasy and Mission Impossible. One thing that doesn’t come across in the Vella description is that there is an ensemble cast. Grey Wolf is one major POV, but we also get four others. Each one is very different in personality, powers, and skills. It frees me up to jump to different perspectives and tell a cinematic story.

What would you say inspired this story?

All of my favorite urban fantasy stories. 🙂 Supernatural, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Dresden Files, and Iron Druid are at the top of the list. I wanted to tell stories in those types of worlds, but with a super-spy team package. This series has vampires, Shifters, wizards, Fae, etc., but each with my own twist.

Who’s your favorite character(s) in Obsidian Monsters so far? I know it’s hard!

It is especially tough with this series, because there are so many POVs and supporting characters. Grey Wolf is one of my favorites (especially with his support team of Sage and O), but Church is another. She brings in my Latinx side, martial art training, and Catholic influences. I’m excited for her story arc! Grey Wolf: I enjoy his snark, gadgets, and the geeky terminology Sage is always throwing at him.

What’s your writing process like?

I wrote a first draft of season one before Vella started, so I’m mainly revising each episode with an editor per week and polishing my world-building. I found the details in my world changed a little as I wrote season one.

When I wrote the first draft, I outlined the season and made a story bible using templates I created in Scrivener. I’m a terrible procrastinator when it comes to writing, so I used timed writing sprints occasionally during Zoom write-ins with other authors.

What made you want to Obsidian Monsters on Kindle Vella instead of publishing it as an E-book?

I tried to write the season with a thriller format, so I thought it would be a good fit. I’ve always loved the idea of serial fiction, so had to give it a try.

What’s coming up next for your writing, Kindle Vella or otherwise?

I’m publishing an anthology in November called, Dragons of a Different Tail: 17 Unusual Dragon Tales. Each story gives a unique spin on dragon stories. We have dragons in different time periods, different genres—even in space! I had a great time working with 17 talented authors on the anthology and am excited for its release.
